A GPS receiver has a number of advantages. A map display makes orientation easier during XC flights, even sectors are displayed. Lots of flight data can be recorded in detail, so you can easily evaluate your flights later on your PC or submit your tracks to the OLC. Finally, an accurate location determination is relevant to safety, e.g. if you have to land somewhere unexpected.
